MOO News issue III - Spring 2025

From the President….

The Board of Directors and I are so very happy to see spring finally here!  This winter felt awfully long, especially with those bitterly cold temperatures in January and snow that just stayed around way too long.

The MOOseum will be opening on Saturdays to the public in just a few short weeks with the first Saturday May 3.  There are quite a few school groups and community groups signed up for special tours in May and later this summer.  We can’t wait to see how our new exhibit on How To Milk a Cow is received by our visitors.  Our goal was to make this exhibit more hands-on with easy to read explanations.  Currently, work continues on the exhibit; it appears, however, that is will be ready for our opening weekend.

During the MOOseum’s open season we have three very special events. In this newsletter we want to share information about these 2025 events. We hope to see you at them this year.  Please encourage your like-minded friends, to sign up for the newsletter at the bottom of the home page on the MOO’s website.  Also, let us know topics you would like to learn more about by sending us an email. Your input helps greatly in our mission of sharing with you all the rich dairy history of MoCo.

HERITIAGE WEEKEND, JUNE 28, 2025

Saturday, June 28, 2025 is Heritage Weekend and the MOOseum will be open from 10 am – 4 pm that day.

This event is sponsored by Heritage Montgomery (HM)….which is what? Heritage Montgomery is a non-profit, 501-3(c) that was created by State officials and county leaders to raise the profile of the area’s heritage, ensuring that residents and visitors alike understand and value the county’s past.

With a history stretching back beyond colonial times, Montgomery County has a long heritage evidenced by rich cultural and historical resources.  HM has sponsored and made possible many of the exhibits in the King Barn.

In addition to all of our wonderful exhibits, crafts and playroom, visitors attractions include:

  • Mark, the Balloon Man from 10 am – 12 pm
  • A presentation about Cows and Climate Change given by UMD Professor Emeritus Bob Peters at 11 am
  • King family presentation on Irvington Farm/King Farm community at 1 pm.

In addition, a new How to Milk a Cow exhibit and the beautiful 1919 Ford Model T milk delivery truck (weather permitting) will be available for expanding your dairy knowledge.

FARM TOUR & HARVEST SALE WEEKEND, JULY 26, 2025

Saturday, July 26, 2025 is Farm Tour and Harvest Sale weekend and the MOOseum will be open from 10 am – 3 pm.  This event is offered by MoCo Office of Agriculture to promote agriculture as a viable component of the County’s economic sector.  The MOOseum as well as dozens of small farms will be open for visitation where visitors can purchase locally grown and raised products.

Once again the MOO’s regular exhibits, crafts and playroom will be open along with special guests:

  • Mark, the Balloon Man, from 10 am – 12 pm.
  • Warrior Canine Connections (WCC) will be with us from 10 am – 12 pm with presentations at 10:30 am and 11:30 am. Please bring donations of dog treats and toys for their canines in training

We are very pleased to have WCC at this event.  WCC is a pioneering organization that utilizes its Mission Based Trauma Recovery model to help wounded Warriors reconnect with life, their families, their communities, and each other.  They are located on the Savage-Leigh Farm #1, Farm # 61 on the MOO Map, a former dairy farm just down the road from the MOOseum.

MOOSEUM'S FALL FESTIVAL, OCTOBER 11, 2025

Saturday, October 11, 2025 is the MOOseum’s Fall Festival from 10 am – 2 pm.

This special event was the brainchild of our very first student service learning volunteer in 2010 and is especially geared for the young…and young at heart.

There will be activities, games, crafts and demonstrations.  Costumes are encouraged! A special event is face painting; please check back with us as the time TBD.

The non-profit King Barn Dairy MOOseum

Housed in that long barn through a successful private-public partnership with M-CNNP/Montgomery Parks, the MOOseum is active in preserving the history of dairy farms in Montgomery County Maryland . The mission of the MOOseum is to keep the rich dairy history of MoCo alive for residents and the many out of state visitors to South Germantown Recreation Park.

The MOOseum has a multitude of exhibits on all things dairy – a herd of cows from breeds milked in MoCo, cow models to milk, and information and artifacts on the transportation of milk, the life of dairy farmers and the history of where the 600+ dairy farms were in MoCo.  Children enjoy the old-fashioned, outside games, making cow themed crafts, playing with farm toys, hearing stories about farmers, and learning exactly where milk comes from.

We invite you to explore the MOOseum and encourage those interested to come and visit us during our open season, which runs from May to October annually. For the latest details on special events, please check our website.
